EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Matto Rules

Switzerland based indie-rockers group Matto Rules are back with a brand new single ‘Dive‘ which is taken off their upcoming sophomore album ‘Hidden Scenes’ due for release this coming February.

Here we speak exclusively to the four-piece about their new music, touring plans, and much, much more;

Growing up who inspired your love of music?
We all got into music in the late 80s and 90s, but we come from different musical origins. Depeche Mode, Stone Temple Pilots, REM, Beastie Boys but also 60s stuff like Bob Dylan, The Who or Stevie Wonder were important and inspiring while growing up.

How did you all meet?
In the parallel universe of sonic waves where people with similar vibes tend to float together eventually…! Jokes aside: Three of us had been playing together for quite some time already, but eventually we got tired of the heavy guitar stuff and started to create our own signature sound which also involved synth parts. That’s where we met up with our keyboardist who shares the same musical vision.

When did you decide to come together as a band?
It just happened like most great things in life. We realized that something great was evolving and everyone wanted to be part of it.

How do you feel your individual music styles come together to create Matto Rules’ sound?
It has always been our aim to create a distinctive Matto mix of each member’s distilled musical style. That’s why we have both a collective as well as individual approach in the songwriting process. Starting from an original idea, we add everyone’s flavor, while our drummer Tom is the chief cook or producer in order to maintain a certain unité de doctrine.

What inspired your new single ‘Dive’?
Repeated dreams of diving. The song refers to the state of mind between sleep and being awake, when you walk through the door of subconsciousness into the dream world. We think the late 70s and 80s sound vibes fit very well with it.

What date can fans expect your new album in February?
We will release our second album ‘Hidden Scenes’ on February 9th 2018. To shorten the waiting time, we’ll release our second single ‘Mind Cab’ at the end of January.

Do you have any touring plans lined up?
So far, we have a couple of cool shows in Switzerland coming up. The wider objective will then be to go touring abroad. It’s all in the making at the moment and we are confident that we will hit the UK at some point next year.

What do you hope listeners take from your music?
An extra boost for whatever it is needed and a comforting mood to cling onto. Since ‘Dive’ and the new album as a whole stem from the subconscious and the dream world, we hope that our music also leads listeners to explore these spheres. And last but not least, a craving to come see us live on stage.

What do you hope to achieve over the course of your career?
Mattoforce One! At the end of the day, all that counts is getting our music out there and meeting more like-minded people in the parallel universe of sonic waves…and this one!
