Michael Shannon does a good job of looking mean – even when he isn’t playing a tough guy in HBO hit Boardwalk Empire.

The 38-year-old actor was enjoying a quiet smoke between takes on the set of the hugely popular show, in which he plays hired muscle George Mueller, AKA former Prohibition Agent Nelson Van Alden.

Dressed in full costume, Shannon cut an imposing figure despite being out of character, with his distinctive features set into a scowl as he relaxed with a cigarette on Tuesday.

Indeed, a handful of streets in the traditionally trendy New York borough have received a sweeping 1920's and 30’s make-over in keeping with the show’s setting, while cast-members new and old mill about in authentic looking Depression era clothes.

Amongst those sighted over the last few days is model and actress Gretchen Mol, whose character, Gillian Darmody, has been a regular fixture on the show since its launch in 2010.

The 40-year-old was photographer filming scenes with newcomer Ron Livingstone – the TV veteran who played Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriend in another HBO show, Sex and the City.

Livingstone has been cast as an ‘out-of-town- businessman’ who develops a romance with Gillian shortly after arriving in Atlantic City, where the show is based.

Shooting on Friday, the pair certainly appeared smitten as they exchanged lines on a local pier, with Mol holding a parasol as she gazed into a very dapper looking Livingstone’s eyes.

A huge budget, stellar cast and the creative input of Martin Scorcese has helped turn Boardwalk Empire into one of HBO’s most successful shows despite its relatively limited run.

As well as Shannon and Mol the show also features the talents of leading man Steve Buscemi, Scottish actress Kelly McDonald and Michael Kenneth Williams – perhaps best known for his role as gay stick-up man Omar Little in The Wire.
